Tony Bish newly appointed Chairman of Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association
Less than a month into his role, new Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association (GGWA) Chairman, Tony Bish, has had little time to pause for breath.
Sacred Hill’s Chief Winemaker, Tony and his Executive team have been busily planning a strategy for GIMBLETT GRAVELS future success.
Says Tony, “I am proud to become Chairman of this incredible group of like-minded growers and wine producers.. I would like to acknowledge the outgoing Chairman, Nick Aleksich of Mills Reef Winery, whose energy and commitment over the last two years has served to further raise the profile of GIMBLETT GRAVELS wines, especially in the international arena.
2012 has produced 24 trophies and 62 gold medals in domestic and international wine shows, two of the top twelve rated New Zealand wines in the recently published Wine Advocate and numerous other glowing reviews from wine critics around the world.”
The future prospects are bright but not without challenges along the way. Tony adds “We’ve come a long way in our first ten years. We don’t underestimate the magnitude of the task ahead of us but we are fully preparing the Association, its members and brand GIMBLETT GRAVELS for the next decade, and beyond.
Our vision is to be internationally recognized and acclaimed for consistent production of exceptional quality, and highly valued wines. Through our members’ collaboration, belief and integrity in all that we do, I am confident we shall achieve this sooner rather than later.”
GIMBLETT GRAVELS is a fully registered trademark owned by the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association, established in 2001. Only members of the Association are entitled to brand their qualifying wines as GIMBLETT GRAVELS where such wines comprise a minimum of 95% fruit grown on specific free-draining gravel soils deposited by the Ngaruroro River in inland Hawke’s Bay, North Island.
The combination of these deeply layered gravels – of which there are only 800hectares (2000 acres) by area – and warm maritime climate has served to produce blended (Bordeaux varietal) red and Syrah wines that have achieved critical acclaim in New Zealand and internationally.
