NAUTILUS ESTATE RELASES LIMITED EDITION
FOUR BARRIQUES PINOT NOIR 2009

Marlborough Pinot Noir 2009

Nautilus Estate Four Barriques Pinot Noir 2009

—From the heart of Marlborough, New Zealand comes a truly exceptional wine—

Occasionally, a particular vintage or a particular site produces a wine that is really special. Four Barriques Pinot Noir crafted by Nautilus Estate of Marlborough is one of those wines.

Made only in an outstanding vintage, Four Barriques is a premium cellar blend of the best four pinot noir barrels. In 2009 three barrels come from the elevated Clay Hills Vineyard in the Southern Valleys of Marlborough and one barrel from the Kaituna Vineyard on the northern side of the Wairau River.

Previously sold exclusively at our cellar door, the 09 vintage marks the first time Four Barriques Pinot Noir will be offered to domestic and international customers. This is extremely rare as only 100 cases are made in a chosen year. The last vintage, 2007, won the trophy at the 2008 Air New Zealand Wine Awards for “Best in show, exhibition class red wines” and hopes are also high for this release.

Winemaker Clive Jones says the Four Barriques Pinot Noir is deliberately more robust and structured compared with the elegant and refined Nautilus Pinot Noir. Aged in barrel for 18 months, this wine uses 50% new oak. The end result yields a special sense of terroir, with an opulent structure and luscious flavours that end in a long-fine, velvety finish.

It’s a stunning reminder of the complexities of Marlborough pinot noir.

“Four Barriques is one of our favourite projects in the winery. After tasting well over 100 barrels of pinot as they mature, we get to pick out four of our favourites for this blend.  The 09 version is looking fantastic. It’s just starting to hit its straps and has a great future ahead of it.”

Acclaimed New Zealand wine critic and writer Michael Cooper tasted the 2009 vintage pre-release, giving it five stars in the 2012 edition of his best-selling Buyer’s Guide to New Zealand Wines. “Highly perfumed, it is deliciously sweet-fruited, with smooth cherry, plum and nut flavours showing excellent richness, complexity and harmony. Already delicious, it should be in full stride 2012+.”

Four Barriques Pinot Noir 2009 is available through fine wine specialists and selected restaurants from October 1.
