GIMBLETT GRAVELS 2010 ANNUAL VINTAGE SELECTION REVEALEDGimblett Gravels Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

Announcing the 12 red wines selected to represent the GIMBLETT GRAVELS 2010 vintage

The third year of this initiative from the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association (GGWA), the Annual Vintage Selection serves as a unique snapshot of a particular vintage and helps to chart the evolution of GIMBLETT GRAVELS wines on a vintage by vintage basis.

The challenging task of selection falls to one highly capable, and respected, international palate belonging to Sydney based Master of Wine, Andrew Caillard MW. Andrew’s selections for the 2010 Annual Vintage selection comprise the following wines (in alphabetical order):

Blended reds (Bordeaux varieties):

Babich Irongate Cabernet Merlot

Babich The Patriarch Cabernet Merlot

Craggy Range Sophia Merlot Cabernet

Esk Valley Winemakers Reserve Merlot Malbec Cabernet

Mission Estate Jewelstone Merlot Cabernet Franc

Newton Forrest Cornerstone Merlot Cabernet

Sacred Hill Brokenstone Merlot

Sacred Hill Helmsman Cabernet Merlot

Villa Maria Reserve Merlot

Syrah:

Crossroads Winemakers Selection Syrah

Mills Reef Elspeth Syrah

Trinity Hill Homage Syrah

As Chairman of the GGWA, Nick Aleksich comments “This was by far the most challenging selection process yet, with over 40 of our members’ top wines submitted for selection. The majority of the nominated wines are already gold medal and/or trophy winners in their own right.  To have so many quality wines in the running is a fantastic position to be in – testament to our special terroir and dedication of our members. Andrew Caillard MW has been the selector since the inaugural 2008 vintage and we thank him for his diligence and willingness to make the tough decisions to pick just 12 wines to represent GIMBLETT GRAVELS. ”

A  very limited number of 2010 Annual Vintage Selection packs will shortly be sent out to key wine media and influencers around the world for their review.

GIMBLETT GRAVELS is a fully registered trademark owned by the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowers Association, established in 2001. Only members of the Association are entitled to brand their qualifying wines as GIMBLETT GRAVELS where such wines comprise a minimum of 95% fruit grown on specific free-draining gravel soils deposited by the Ngaruroro River in inland Hawke’s Bay, North Island.

The combination of these deeply layered gravels – of which there are only 800hectares (2000 acres) by area – and warm maritime climate has served to produce blended (Bordeaux varietal) red and Syrah wines that have achieved critical acclaim in New Zealand and internationally.
